Detroit Lions Head Coach Matt Patricia Opens Training Camp On Knee Scooter

- Let’s get NFL training camp rolling! Quite literally in fact, as Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia opened training camp on a Nova Knee Walker.
During Patricia’s first news conference of training camp he did so on a knee walker assisting him in getting to and from the podium. Patricia underwent a surgery over the summer for what described as “A tendon, bone and muscle” located in his left foot.
Patricia was quoted saying “Really just there’s very few times during the year where we have an opportunity to go and kind of get things done so just pretty much been dealing with a little bit of a lower leg issue and a muscle thing, bone thing for a while. So, kind of had that cleaned up. Just trying to stay off it here for a couple days, so day by day and we’ll go from there.” Patricia said.
The Lions like many teams around the league usually use a riser to elevate the podium on but this was not in place to accommodate Patricia. Also notice how Patricia was using a knee pad cover. Considering the amount of movement it takes to get through a stadium, parking lot, practice fields, meetings and more it's no wonder why an NFL head coach would choose this method over crutches. Out on the practice field Patricia used a golf cart as he drove around the sidelines. “I’m really trying to be careful with it so that I don’t have any setbacks from that standpoint. So probably a little bit overcautious when I can be, as opposed to, it’s a long season.” Patricia said.
He’s right to be cautious the Lions need their head coach coming off of a 6-10 season the team has a lot of promise this year. The coach is usually seen active during practices. The former New England Patriots Defensive Coordinator was often seen highly engaged with players during sessions. Seeing him have to take a backseat while he heals was a much different look for the head coach of The Lions.
It’s no wonder to see Patricia choose a knee scooter as many famous athletes and celebrities have turned to the venerable form of transportation. They are much more comfortable than crutches and allow for a much smoother ride and ease of access when moving around.
