Alternative Crutches You Don't Know About
- If it’s one thing everyone hates, it’s being set back by an injury that’s going to necessitate a prolonged recovery period. Nevertheless, it’s a burden and takes time away from things we would much rather be doing, such as the main obvious reason -- BACK TO WORK! One of the main concerns that our customers have is the ability to get back on the job after an injury. Having functioned on standard crutches the ability to be efficient is severely limited by the often-awkward movements. The limited ability to utilize your hands is also a contributing factor to why so many people chose alternative options to crutches .
Recovery must be done fittingly in order to avert future injury but crutches? Seriously! When my doctor told me, I was going to be on them for 10-14 weeks it was like hearing a jail sentence! That feels like an eternity at first and even hearing the word crutches just sounds like your going to be in for a long-haul journey to recovery. Not only are these uncomfortable devices a colossal burden but they can affect an individual’s mental stability. The longer you are required to use them the lengthier the recovery can feel. By the 4th week I was already looking for any possible solution to get off crutches, but I didn’t have the familiarity that there were other exceedingly more comfortable possibilities out there.
We are going to be taking a glimpse at some of the more lucrative choices out there which we feel would highly benefit someone who’s going through a recovery. Now there are a plethora of options out there and it can get overwhelming at times to decide which option will be the best fit for you. We are not here to say these options would be your final decision but here at Rent A Knee Walker we know a thing or two about alternative options which are proven and work for our clients.
Just ask Annissa from Haines City, Florida she recently got married while using a knee walker!
So lets take a look at some of the crutch substitute options that you don’t know about.
Swivelmate Knee Walker
The first option we have is one of the finest effective substitutes to crutches that we have come across and that is none other than a knee walker! At the top of the list is the Swivelmate which is hands down one of the best knee walkers in the industry. Why? 90 degree turning ability, so stability is never compromised. The Swivelmate model was designed specifically to be robust and steady yet provides the user unparalleled maneuvering ability. This makes it the number one choice, especially for use in small spaces like your kitchen or bathroom.
Seriously this thing is a comprehensive lifesaver! We have seen so many stories of people thanking us for the comfort this scooter delivers. One of the best things about a knee walker is that you don’t end up straining your hands and arms as you do with crutches. This takes a lot of strain off your upper body and aids in steadiness. You use your hands to hold onto the handlebars and also have a breaking mechanism to brake the knee walker when going down an incline. Feeling stable on your feet with a knee walker can feel uneasy at first but within a few minutes of using one you will see why a knee walker is so highly regarded.
iWALK2.0
The iWALK3.0 is an excellent option to use and unlike a knee walker this model allows the user the ability to navigate stairs and work completely hands free.
The iWALKFree's new design, features tool free height adjustment to achieve a truly custom fit. Plus, your weight distribution is on your shin not your knee like on a traditional knee walker - so for users with knee issues this may be a better option for you.
While this hands free crutch model the user to have excellent balance and coordination, it is a great option for many customers who want to truly walk free during their recovery! The iWALK2.0 lets you continue your daily routines while also providing hands down some of the best maneuverability in the business. Simple tasks such as grocery shopping, laundry, washing dishes, carrying a drink without spilling it all over yourself. You can continue to live a normal life.
One last reason this model in particular is such a great substitute to conventional crutches is the way the design allows you to be more at ease in bad weather. Standard crutches don’t have a wide surface area under them so if you hit a patch of ice or run into a wet floor the standard crutches become treacherous. This is not the case with the iWALK2.0 the foot is offset to the side making it much more stable especially on wet surfaces. The larger surface area also makes this a much more stable model compared to the conventional crutch design.
Ergonomic Crutches
At first glance these don’t look much different than traditional crutches but the difference in feeling is vast. Standard crutches use so much impact on your arms that you will begin to feel fatigued fast. This is remedied by The In-Motion Pro which is designed to reduce impact on the wrist and underarm reducing nerve damage and carpel tunnel syndrome. The unique shape helps encourage proper posture as you stay active in your recovery.
Another reason Ergonomic crutches are great is that when you have to travel long distances such as to class or such the benefit is that your arms won’t feel like Jell-O when you arrive. When I used to have to travel long distances particularly uphill because my college was very hilly the crutches would absolutely destroy my arms. By the time I arrived at class my arms were sore and writing or typing became difficult. If I had the Ergonomic Crutches, they would have absolutely benefited me and improved my overall production of simple things such as writing. For anyone in a college environment or a place you have to walk long distances, I absolutely recommend these crutches. You can conveniently find crutches for sale on our website.
The fact that these crutches improve your posture is a huge benefit. On standard crutches we can be very tempted to bend over and slouch our posture. This is not only bad for your back, but it also puts added stress on other areas of your body not used to taking that much strain. Having a straight correct posture is a beneficial aid for your recovery. The fact that these crutches have impact absorption and power assist springs located inside the crutch assembly is a game changer.
Orthomate Knee Scooter
Another one of our favorite knee walkers is The Orthomate. This knee scooter is very durable and perfect for outdoor environments. The All-Terrain Orthomate was designed for those users who need to navigate coarser terrains outside. Having one of these in a mountainous or unstable surface area is a huge benefit. This model gives you a smooth ride on surfaces like grass or small gravel compared to other standard knee walker tires but it’s still small enough to use inside the home as well.
An ideal combination of a regular knee walker and an all-terrain one. You get the smaller size and better turning radius of a regular model plus the benefits of all-terrain wheels. You no longer need to struggle with the larger, heavier All-Terrain models like the Knee Rover!
The Orthomate comes with all the desired features of a large, 14" knee pad, easy steering and folds for transport. The knee pad adjusts for both left side and right-side leg use. It can accommodate users in height from approximately 5'2"-6'3" and up to 350lbs.
At the outset these are just some of the many options that exist which we found to be great substitute to crutches that you may not have known about. In the end you are the one that needs to feel comfortable on the desired assistive device you chose to help aid in your recovery. Although we are partial to these devices that’s not to say traditional crutches don’t work. I made a full recovery from both of my surgeries on regular crutches, but the pain and inconveniences would have been offset had I went with a more comfortable option.
